7 Winter weather hair tips to bring you in from the cold

7 Winter weather hair tips to bring you in from the cold

As we move into the colder months, we face a whole new slew of beauty issues to deal with. Luckily, there are things that you can do every day to treat wintertime hair blues, and even prevent them from happening in the first place.

Hydration will be key here, as well as planning for the unique toll that winter weather can wreak on unsuspecting hair.

1. Use a humidifier

You probably associate a humidifier with when you’re sick, but using one continuously throughout the winter can seriously help your hair.

Unless you’re in the tropics, heating your home is a must as the season changes. Unfortunately, heating can dry out the air in your house, which can sap the moisture out of your hair as well.

A humidifier and essential oil diffuser combo can help you feel super-luxurious. Lavender is a great choice for a relaxing, spa-like experience, or you could get festive with it and diffuse some warming spices, fresh fir or pine, or soothing peppermint.

2. Infuse your hair with moisturizing treatments

Dry hair equals dull, frizzy locks, which isn’t on our hair wishlists. So take a little time out of your busy schedule to pamper yourself with a weekly hair mask.

Ingredients like coconut oil, argan oil, and vitamin E can repair and prevent damage, as well as fortify and moisturize your hair. Look for high-quality oils, extracts, and vitamins in your hair masks to be sure that you’re giving your hair the best. Our Hair La Vie® Mask contains 11 naturally sourced ingredients, including keratin & essential oils, including argan, coconut, and avocado oils, keratin, and bamboo extract that all work synergistically to moisturize and strengthen your hair while also supporting the look of thicker rejuvenated locks.

3. Keep up with your cut

For a lot of us, cold weather means longer hair. It’s cozier, warmer, and represents the season. Not to put a damper on your hair growth goals, but a regular trim can really help you keep your locks in line. It may even encourage it to grow longer.

Trimming off a split end when it’s just forming prevents the split from traveling up the shaft of the hair and creating damage and breakage. Stick to your schedule of regular trims with your stylist and see healthier, shinier hair!

4. Resist the temptation of a hot shower

There’s nothing quite like stepping into a hot shower on a chilly day. Soothing, warming — it’s the ultimate comfort experience. Indulge this season, but be aware that hot water can strip your hair and scalp of their natural oils, which will only make your battle against dry hair more difficult.

Lower the temperature just a bit, and it’ll be easier to keep your hair and your skin hydrated and healthy this winter.

5. Don’t go outside with wet hair

How many times have you heard that you’ll catch your death of cold if you go outside with wet hair? This may or may not be true, but you definitely run the risk of serious hair damage if outdoor temperatures are below freezing.

Make sure that your hair is thoroughly dry before you step outside because even the smallest amount of water can freeze and hurt your hair, causing breakage. Frozen, broken, brittle hair? Not this season!

6. Don’t overuse heat tools

Don’t go outside with wet hair of any kind, but also don’t use heat tools every day. Those freezing cold regions are a real hairstyle buzzkill. While frozen hair is a real problem, heat tools can cause damage of their own.

If you must use your blow dryer, opt for lower heat settings and always use a heat protectant to minimize damage. Save your flat iron and curling wand for special occasions and try a new hair accessory, braid, hat, or scarf.

7. Speaking of hats, wind is not your friend

Cold winter weather also means storms and windy conditions. We’ve all been there when we’ve spent the day with the wind whipping our hair around and then had to deal with the messy, tangled after-effects.

Not only can the wind cause damage, but untangling the resulting knots can tear, rip, and break your hair.

The problem is that you can’t simply avoid the wind. If it’s out there, you’re going to be in it. A hat or scarf is a simple, easy way to protect your hair from the wind and is a great opportunity to add a pop of color or refresh your winter look.

Face winter without fear

Your wardrobe changes with the seasons and your haircare routine should too! Summer and winter cause drastically different conditions that call for drastically different methods to keep your hair healthy, smooth, and shiny.

Make a few changes in your routine for the winter to combat the problems that arise this time of year. Mainly, focus on keeping your hair hydrated and strong and minimizing the damage from extreme weather conditions.
