Farro with bananas, walnuts, and dried cranberries

Farro with bananas, walnuts, and dried cranberries

Not familiar with farro? It’s an ancient wheat grain that’s been around for thousands of years with a lovely, chewy texture and nutty flavor. It’s a great alternative to oatmeal to get your day started, and these tasty toppings up the nutritional ante on this powerhouse food.

As far as your hair is concerned, the important nutrients that farro contains are niacin and zinc. Niacin helps your body to digest and use the foods that you eat, and is also important for skin and hair. Eating a bunch of nutrient-dense foods only does your body good if it can break them down and use them!

Zinc deficiencies have been linked to hair loss and it’s also great for your immune system. Safeguard your hair and ward off wintertime sickness with a warming bowl of farro!

Bananas are a great natural sweetener and are packed with vitamins C, B2 (riboflavin), and B9 (folate). Antioxidants protect your body, skin, and hair from damage and B vitamins support healthy cell function, division, and growth, which can lead to healthier, stronger hair!

Walnuts add a great bit of crunch and a healthy dose of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Not only are they good for your heart, but they’ve also been shown to help reduce hair loss.

Dried cranberries add a delicious sweet-tart zing and bring even more vitamin C and antioxidant power to the table.

Warm-up with this filling, simple, delectable oatmeal alternative. Your hair will thank you!

Farro with Bananas, Walnuts, and Dried Cranberries

4 servings

Ingredients:

5 cups water

1 cup farro

¼ teaspoon salt

8 slices banana

¼ cup chopped dried cranberries

¼ cup chopped walnuts

¼ cup honey

1 cup skim milk

Directions:

Bring water and salt to a boil in a medium-sized pot. Stir in the farro and reduce heat to low. Simmer, stirring often, for about 40 minutes.

Top with your favorite combination of bananas, walnuts, cranberries, honey, and skim milk.

Enjoy!

Tip!

For a little extra crunchy crispness and a deeper flavor, toast the walnuts in a dry frying pan over medium heat until fragrant. Watch carefully so they don’t burn!
