How A Healthy Scalp Promotes Hair Growth

How A Healthy Scalp Promotes Hair Growth

Our mothers raised us with the notion that trimming our hair will nurture growth, but there’s an even more important factor at play: the health of our scalp. The quality of hair growth is directly affected by our scalp’s condition, which proves that true beauty really does come from within.

A Healthy Scalp Leads To Healthy Follicles

Each strand of hair originates from the epidermis, otherwise known as a hair follicle. This is the “living” portion of your hair, which is also the most integral to the rest of your tresses’ overall health. Your scalp is host to approximately one hundred thousand follicles, and each of them are maintained by blood vessels located within your scalp. These blood vessels feed the root of your hair, which creates more protein cells that help it grow. Having a healthy, nourished scalp helps promote the regular function of these blood vessels as they feed your hair follicles.1

Follicles and Hair Growth

When your scalp is healthy and hydrated, your follicles will follow a regular three-phase growth cycle: anagen, catagen, and telogen.

Anagen: The growing stage. About 90% of hair follicles are currently in this period, which lasts 3-5 years.

Catagen: Your hair's growing stage slows as your follicle prepares to become dormant.

Telogen: This is when your follicle is completely dormant. It lasts for 3 to 4 months before the old hair falls out.2

Maintaining the regular timeline of these phases is key to promoting fast hair growth. Your scalp’s health directly affects these phases, which is why it’s essential to focus on exfoliating, supplementing and hydrating it regularly.

How To Support Your Scalp’s Health

There are 3 key things we should do regularly to keep our scalp healthy:

Exfoliate –– your scalp needs to be free of dead skin cells and excess oil in order to support hair.
Hydrate –– keeping your scalp moisturized is integral for healthy growth and deep moisturization.
Supplement –– key nutrients, like biotin and vitamin E, help keep your scalp in optimal condition.

Supporting your scalp’s health will have a positive effect on the rest of your hair, and while it may take some time to see results, it’s important to start focusing on nourishing your scalp as soon as possible.
