What is Kiva?

Kiva is a fantastic organization that uses crowdfunding to provide microloans to entrepreneurs around the world. These individuals then use the money to start or build their small businesses. These no-interest loans help them realize their dream while also helping their families, their communities, and it also helps those who fund them.

How it works

An individual applies for a loan, and the loan goes through an underwriting and approval process. When approved, the loan is posted for individual lenders to support in small amounts of $25 or more. After the fundraising is complete, the borrower then receives the loan. The borrower begins repaying the loan based on an approved schedule and their ability to pay. The people who were generous enough to make a loan then either get their money back to make a new loan or withdraw their investment.

While many different people can apply for Kiva loans, there is a strong drive to help women become successful entrepreneurs. Kiva started with the mission of expanding financial access to underserved communities, to help people who wanted to help themselves but were unable. Today, Kiva has expanded, and it’s not just available in underserved communities. Often, the funding these aspiring entrepreneurs need simply isn't available to them through traditional banking methods. This fact alone would leave many without options if it weren’t for Kiva. Now, they can get the money they need to start their businesses and build their futures. 

It’s amazing how a loan of $25 can be given, repaid, and then given to another person over and over and make such a significant difference. That’s why Hair La Vie is so happy to be doing something that helps so many. A portion of every purchase goes to Kiva and helps support individuals who inspire growth and development in their communities. 

Today, Kiva has funded nearly $1.5 billion in loans, making it a leading global nonprofit, creating opportunities for communities around the world.
