No matter how many tutorials you watch, you still can’t get your fine hair to settle into those beachy waves that everyone else seems to master with ease. Well, get ready to be a master because we’ve got the hair tips you need to get the look you want.
Even gals with super-fine hair deserve to have trendy styles. You are probably already familiar with how your hair reacts, it holds curl and looks great in the bathroom, but as soon as you leave the house it’s gone flat and lifeless. But, believe it or not, beachy waves are made to make your hair look fantastic.
The first step is collecting the right tools to accomplish the look you want. One note to remember is that while we certainly don’t want you to spend more than you can afford, investing in quality tools that you’ll keep and use regularly can help you get the look you want.
Volumizing shampoo and conditioner. Always use a lightweight volumizing shampoo and conditioner with moisturizing properties. Wash your hair at the scalp only and condition only the ends of your hair, not the scalp.
Hair dryer. People with fine hair need a blow dryer that dries quickly. A ceramic heating element gives you the speed you want without drying out your hair. For a little extra oomph, look for static-reducing ionic technology.
Boar bristle brush. Select a top-notch boar’s bristle brush. Make sure that you purchase one that’s all boar’s bristles. A mixed brush with nylon bristles will be less expensive, but it won’t be gentle enough for your hair.
Curling wand. To get the beachy waves you want, you need to learn about the difference between a curling iron and a curling wand. But in this case, you want the wand, so you get that curl you want.
You’re going to want a tighter curl than most people because it’s going to loosen up on its own. A 1” barrel will probably be right for you, but you might want to experiment with a tapered wand.
Another thing to consider is adjustable heat. You want enough heat to establish a curl but not so much that you’ll burn your hair or dry it out.
Texturizing spray. Practice with a few different texturizing products that are designed for fine hair until you find one that works for you. Spray it in your hands first and then work your hands into your hair for added texture.
Now that you’ve got the tools you need, it’s time to get those beachy waves. Wash and condition your hair as normal so you have a starting place. Then:
Start by flipping upside down and drying the underside to give you some lift and body. Then turn back right-side up and dry the rest, pointing the nozzle downward to the tips to prevent flyaways. Dry hair thoroughly.
Section hair and put it aside and begin working with the bottom layer. Use your boar’s bristle brush to smooth out your hair.
Start by spraying your texturizer into your hands and working it through your hair. You don’t want so much that it gets heavy and weighs your hair down, but you want enough that it adds body and holds curls.
Curl your hair in 1” sections away from your face. Be careful using a curling wand, as it doesn’t have a clip, so it’s easy to burn your hands. If it comes with a protective glove, wear it.
Work through your sections of hair until your entire head has been curled.
Run your fingers through your hair to finger comb it. Shake a little bit as you do this to get a truly tousled look. As you do this, you might notice a few strands that need a little extra curl.
It’s time to hold the look with a little more texturizing spray, but this time you’ll spray it directly on your hair.
Now you’ve got that look you want with enough technique and product to hold it in place.
No matter what type of hair you were born with, beachy waves take work. For gals with fine hair, careful thought needs to go into your tools. It’s important to begin with quality products that are designed for your hair type.
Once you’ve got the right equipment, you can begin creating the style you want. Texturizing spray is your friend through this process and will help you establish the look you want and hold it in place.
Don’t be discouraged if your first attempt doesn’t look the way you want it to. It’s probably going to take a little while to get comfortable with the process, but once you have it down, you’ll be able to recreate this look without a lot of time or effort.
