Scalp calming oatmeal scrub

Scalp calming oatmeal scrub

When you love your scalp, it loves you back and rewards you with amazing hair. Half of what we do to get healthier hair starts with the scalp, so you want to make sure it’s not being overlooked.

We’ve already shared with you our favorite sugar scrub to boost and rejuvenate your scalp through exfoliation, so now we’re going to switch gears. Instead of an abrasive sugar exfoliator, let’s try a calming oatmeal scrub.

This is another hair scrub you can make with ingredients you probably already have at home and is designed to help those of us with a dry scalp that isn’t fungal-related. If you’ve noticed some flakes, don’t immediately assume you have dandruff, because there’s a good chance it’s just a dry scalp.

Although this oatmeal scrub can act as your first line of defense, it shouldn’t be your only one. Once you find out what’s causing your dryness, you should do what you can to remedy it so your scalp can recover quickly. But first, let’s head to the kitchen and pull out the oatmeal.

Oatmeal scrub recipe

With just a handful of basic ingredients, you have all the makings for a great scrub that will calm and soothe your scalp. It can even help manage oil and relieve the most uncomfortable of sunburns.

Ingredients:

½ cup rolled oats

3 tablespoons honey

2 tablespoons aloe gel

3 generous pumps of Hair La Vie Serum

Water as needed (one tablespoon at a time)

Directions:

1. In a bowl combine the oats and honey and stir until well-mixed.

2. Add the aloe gel and Hair La Vie Serum and continue to stir.

3. Finally, add the water one Tbsp at a time until you get a spreadable consistency that’s not too runny.

While your hair is dry, apply directly to your scalp. Take this opportunity to give yourself a good scalp massage and really work the scrub into your scalp.

When you’re done, rinse the scrub out of your hair thoroughly and then shampoo and condition as normal.

How the ingredients work

You are probably familiar with how these ingredients help feed your body, but do you know how they help your hair?

Oatmeal

This superfood is packed with hair-boosting nutrients and soothing properties.

♦ The oatmeal soaks up excess oil on your scalp, helping prevent acne and follicle blockage.

♦ This natural anti-inflammatory is full of antioxidants to help moisturize dry skin and acts as a very gentle exfoliant to remove dead skin cells.

♦ Oats contain saponins, a natural cleanser, that remove the stubborn dirt and oil that can clog your follicles.

♦ The zinc in oatmeal can reduce inflammation and kill acne-causing bacteria on your scalp.

♦ If you suffer from an itchy scalp, it might be due to inflammation under the skin or elevated pH levels. Because oatmeal has a naturally low pH, it can help balance those levels and relieve uncomfortable itching.

Honey

Honey has been an essential food/medicine for centuries and is best known for its high level of antioxidants and antimicrobial/bacterial properties.

♦ The antibacterial nature of honey is fantastic for fighting acne and other small skin irritations around your scalp.

♦ Because honey is clarifying, it can help open up your follicles and pores to easily remove dirt.

♦ The natural antioxidants in honey help moisturize and reinvigorate your scalp, as well as fight free radicals to keep your skin and hair healthy.

♦ As a natural moisturizer, there’s nothing that comes close to the glow of honey.

♦ The sweet softness of honey can soothe a sore or sunburned scalp.

Aloe vera

Though you might think of aloe vera as the burn relief plant, it has many other uses, as well.

♦ Aloe is a very gentle exfoliator, which is perfect for sore scalps or sunburns but can also dry out your skin when overused. That’s why we recommend using it occasionally or as needed.

♦ As a natural antioxidant, aloe protects the skin from free radicals and can act as a defense against harmful agents.

♦ Vitamins A and C are both found in aloe and are great for building strong hair and nourishing your scalp.

Final thoughts

Who knew that one of the healthiest breakfast foods could also make for an excellent scalp scrub? Oatmeal is great for your skin and hair, but when mixed with honey, aloe vera and a dash of Hair La Vie Serum, it really begins to shine.
