What's In Your Shampoo?

What's In Your Shampoo?

Shampoo is your hair's first line of defense against damage and first step towards fabulousness. When you buy a shampoo, are you paying close attention to each ingredient listed on the label? What about that "other" ingredients sections? Let's just make sure your shampoo has everything you NEED to grow healthy hair and nothing you don't.

Proteins

Hair is made of protein, so of course your hair needs it. In fact, it's common for chemically treated hair to require a regular additional boost of rebuilding protein. This begs the question, why are strong natural proteins such as keratin not more common in hair care products? Our guess is because they cost more and everyone is trying to save a dollar, but where's the line in which our health comes into play?

Proteins to Look for in Hair Care:

• Soy & Whey Proteins

• Collagen

• Keratin

• Milk, Oat, Rice or Soy Protein

Moisture

Having essential oils in your haircare products an absolute necessary according to Natural Specialist, Chantay Neptune. She adds,

"A lot of people don't realize, it doesn't matter if it takes eight weeks for you to get the chemical redone, your hair and your scalp are still dry. You have to replenish that moisture."

Essential oils perform a variety of activities, from increasing blood circulation on the scalp allowing better absorption to protecting your strands from the elements

Essential Oils to Look for in Hair Care:

• Argan

• Peppermint

• Tea Tree

• Lemon

• Jojoba Seed

• Rosemary

• Avocado

• Coconut

• Marula

• Cedar Wood

Gentle Cleansers

Think of these as those little scrubbing bubbles from that one shower cleaner, except instead of harsh chemicals they are cleansing with ingredients from nature. A lot of silicone based hair products are causing damaging buildup, what's worse is this can change the actual texture of your hair. Buildup weighs hair down and leaves it dull and dry. Regular removal of buildup can help hair hold texture and body longer. Nothing feels better than a clean, moisturized scalp and mane.

Gentle Cleansers to Look for in Hair Care:

• Willow Bark

• Tea Tree Oil

• Grapefruit Oil

• Lemon Oil

Natural Scents

No one wants a lab grown foreign scent to sport on their scalp, but what's worse is how many chemicals go into fragrance. Products today come with an arsenal of dangerous chemicals. Natural ingredients and scents should be the norm, but unfortunately most of the beauty industry is still decades behind today's research
