How the stars have dealt with female hair loss and why it happens

How the stars have dealt with female hair loss and why it happens

If you feel like you’re losing your hair, you’re not alone. While we all know and expect men to lose their hair as they age, women also can experience hair loss.

In fact, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, most women experience female pattern hair loss as they age.

Unfortunately, age isn’t the only culprit when it comes to hair loss. Some other reasons why women can suddenly find themselves dealing with hair loss or thinning locks include a few different causes.

Let’s first identify these, then look at the inspiration we can draw from celebrities who have found themselves battling the same problematic hair loss.

Reasons for female hair loss (other than aging)

Hormonal imbalance. Pregnancy and menopause put a woman’s body through a rollercoaster of hormonal changes. For some women, this can cause drastic changes in their hair.

Diets, weight changes and nutrition. Rapid weight loss, rapid weight gain, fad diets, inadequate nutrition—all of these can cause your body to go through excess stress that causes telogen effluvium, or temporary hair loss in response to stress.

Physical and mental stress. As noted above, stressors can cause telogen effluvium. Having a major life event, whether physical or emotional, can put your body in a cycle of fight-or-flight responses that causes hair loss.

In addition, with physical issues can come medications and medical treatments (like chemotherapy) that cause hair loss.

Haircare products. The stuff you use to have great looking hair can be working against you. Hair products can cause allergic reactions in your scalp, thinning and fragility of your hair shafts, blocking of your pores and more.

Whew, that’s quite a list of things that can cause hair loss. Take heart in knowing that every woman has the same risk factors, in fact some celebrities have also battled hair loss.

Female celebrities with hair loss

Some of these female celebrities who have struggled with hair loss are obvious because you watched as they managed the problem. Other may surprise you. No matter what, there’s no shame in having hair problems.

Keira Knightly. This super star said she noticed her hair was falling out due to dyeing her hair. She said she wore wigs for five years until she noticed her hair growing back after becoming pregnant with her daughter in 2015.

Tyra Banks. Alopecia areata, or spot balding, plagued this supermodel. She cites 2011 as the worst year for her—when stress got the better of her tresses.

Kristin Davis. This Sex in the City star began losing her hair when the show wrapped up in 2004. She managed her thinning hair by switching haircare products.

Viola Davis. Known for her fantastic wigs and for baring her head without them on How to Get Away With Murder, this celebrity has suffered with the stress-induced alopecia areata since she was 28.

Selma Blair. In 2011 Blair gave birth to her son and noticed postpartum hair loss. Instead of opting for wigs and extensions, she flaunted her bald patches.

Neve Campbell. When Campbell was 23 she was at the height of her career with the success of the Scream movies, but she was also going through a divorce and dealing with stalkers. All of this stress caused her to develop alopecia areata.

Naomi Campbell. The supermodel put her hair through the wringer with tight braids, extensions and weaves. She began noticing significant loss, which eventually lead to losing all of her hair. She now is more careful with her tresses and has noticed it growing back.

Jesy Nelson. This young member of the band Little Mix started losing her hair already at age 13. She not only had to deal with the stress that was causing her hair loss, but also bullying from other teens over her bald spots.

Rosie O’Donnell. Like up to 40% of all women, Rosie suffers from age-related hair loss.

Sarah Hyland. This young star of Modern Family has been very open about dealing with kidney dysplasia. One of the side effects of her medication is hair thinning.

Marilyn Monroe. Obviously, this stratospheric celebrity isn’t around to talk about hair loss, but it’s a known fact that the constant hair bleaching that gave her her signature look caused hair damage and loss.

Wendy Williams. Not only has this talk show host and comedian been very open about her hair loss due to thyroid disease, she’s even come out with her own line of wigs.

Final thoughts

Finally, women are speaking out about their balding problems. While baldness has always been considered a male issue in the past, it’s becoming clear to the public that it’s not just a problem for men.

There are a number of reasons why women experience hair loss, but, since aging is a big factor, many women who reach menopause will have to deal with it at some point.

There are some things you can do to help battle hair loss, especially if it’s stress-related. But take heart in knowing that this is a problem that’s widespread and it’s shared by some of your favorite celebrities.
