8 Trailblazing retro hair accessory looks and tips for the fall

Are you ready to rock your locks like never before? It’s time to get trendy and accessorize to the hilt.

You know the old advice about getting dressed and then taking off one accessory before you head out the door? This year we’re going in totally the opposite direction. This year you’re going to get fully dressed, and then add a hair accessory–even if you’re already wearing one.

Must-have hair accessories for Fall

If you’re a hoarder, or if your mom is, then this season is going to be your favorite yet. Pull out all of your old hair accessories and mom’s, too. It’s retro and forward-thinking all at the same time. In your repertoire for the season, the following are musts.

1. Snap clips

They come in different colors and sizes, and they also come decked out in faux gemstones. Most of them are inexpensive, so you might as well go buy some new ones to match your favorite casual outfits.

Think of them as an accessory with a purpose. Where you used to layer several of them, just use them as needed to keep your hair away from your face.

2. Designer labels

We’ve seen Gucci barrettes just about everywhere this season, and the label or name dropping will continue. If you love the brand, then wear the label in your hair.

As all things high-end-design go these are not cheap accessories, and they’re not something you’ll wear every day, but they can be a really catchy item.

3. Scrunchies

Scrunchies got a bad name for a long time, and they really didn’t deserve it. They’re a great way to tie up your hair without adding stress and damage to your precious strands. They also have stand-out styles with different fabrics, textures, and embellishments.

If the old ones you have tucked away are really only good enough for the gym and home, try investing in a few new ones that have a modern vibe.

4. Oversized headbands

The oversized cloth headband walks the line between traditional headband and headscarf. It’s wide and impactful and works best when it pulls all your hair off your face but then lets it rest in a crazy, undone sort of way. It has a 90’s grunge feel, so it needs to be paired with oversized jewelry and quality clothing to give it a real glam-vibe.

5. Claw clips

They’re ba-aack. You’ve used them for years to pull your hair back when you’re putting on make-up, working on one side of your hair, and even coloring your hair, but now they’re ready to take center stage again.

If you have retro ones that are in good shape, and not missing any teeth, you can try to rock them, but your best bet is to buy some modern metal ones with a geometric attitude.

6. Stretchy hair combs

These funny little treasures might be very different and odd for first-timers. Those who have been around the block still love them from their last rise to fame.

They work like a comb and headband at the same time. The trick is to evenly slide them onto your hair and then flip over, so you catch all of your hair at the nape of your neck, too. Then attach the hair comb to itself.

It encircles your entire mane of hair for a sleeked back look from your face, then you can do whatever you want with the length of your hair.

7. Barrettes

Layered, alone, big and noticeable, small and petite–wherever your whim leads you, that’s where you shall go. Barrettes aren’t just for holding back your bangs as you grow them out. This season they’re everywhere, and they make their own statement. The best barrettes are pretty bold and add a splash of drama to your hair.

8. Bobby pins

You probably bought a new batch of bobby pins last season because stacking and layering them was so much fun. Keep those but look for new ones that are bigger, better, and embellished.

Bobby pins are still one of the greatest styling tools around, and sometimes you’re going to want them to look invisible, other times you’re going to go all out and make them the focal point of your new up-do. Either way, these are a must.

Final thoughts

The really interesting thing about current hair trends is the focus is all about being natural. You want to use natural products whenever possible, to promote a healthier scalp and strand. There’s a shying away from over-processed color and curls and a wider acceptance of the hair you inherited from your ancestors.

All of this is good, and it leads to not only healthier hair but also a step closer to being your most authentic self. It doesn’t need to feel boring either. Long, straight natural hair is lovely, but sometimes you want it to be a little more dramatic.

This is where accessories are brilliant. Stock up on accessories, and you can still have healthy hair while giving it a little extra bling for fun.
