How to Go Pink for Halloween & Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month

How to Go Pink for Halloween & Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Support a great cause and celebrate the kickoff to holiday season at the same time? Yes, there is a way! October not only heralds the costume craze of Halloween, but is also Breast Cancer Awareness month. That’s why Hair La Vie is donating 5% of all profits in October to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

The easiest way to show your support is by sprinkling the color pink into your usual decor and celebrations. For almost 40 years, pink has symbolized breast cancer awareness.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has used pink as its color since it started in 1982, and began using pink visors and ribbons in the early 1990s. For decades, people have been incorporating the color pink any which way they can (clothing, hair, even license plates) to showcase their support!

If you’re one of the many who live for this time of year, here are some great ideas to show support for breast cancer warriors while getting your spook on.

Plant Pink Pumpkins

Halloween and pumpkins have gone hand-in-hand since the 1800s, and there’s now a colorful twist on the season’s staple. We’re not talking plastic or painted here, but the real deal.

If you’re lucky enough to have some garden space, plant some pink pumpkins alongside the traditional orange ones. Look for Porcelain Doll F1 Pink Pumpkin seeds to get this naturally pink, naturally beautiful Halloween staple.

The Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation organizes growers and seed retailers so that a portion of sales go to the foundation, which in turn donates to breast cancer research organizations. If you can’t grow your own, find pink pumpkin growers here.

While you may not want to carve into these pretty pumpkins, displaying one on your porch is a great way to acknowledge Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Decorate Your Party With Pink

This isn’t to say that you should completely forego the classic orange and black for Halloween time, but why not toss in some pink?

Alongside the orange-frosted pumpkin sugar cookies, decorate some of them with pink to match the Porcelain Doll pumpkin that you have out front. Incorporate some pink ribbons throughout, and top your chocolate cupcakes with pink frosting instead of orange.

If you’re throwing a party for adults, mix up some cosmos or some rosé sangria, and break out some good old-fashioned pink lemonade for the kids.

Wear a Pink Costume

There are tons of great ideas out there for a pink-colored costume! Top yours off by pinning a pink ribbon on it so that people will know you’re pink for a reason.

Be One of the Pink Ladies from Grease: Throw on the classic jacket and warm up your curlers for iconic 50s-inspired hair.

Princess Aurora. Make it blue, make it pink! Who wouldn’t want to be a Disney princess for a night in Aurora’s gown, just don’t go near any spindles.

Professor Umbridge. The one that everyone loved to hate. Go for the unexpected Harry Potter character with Dolores Umbridge’s pink tweed skirt suit. Extra points if you can find a tea saucer with a kitten on it.

Elle Woods. Basically anything that the Legally Blonde main character wore is fair game for this costume. Chipper personality optional, but encouraged.

On Wednesdays, We Wear Pink. All you need is an oversized pink polo and some jeans for a super low-key costume that channels Mean Girls’ main character Cady.

Really, You Can Make Anything Pink. Wear a pink poodle skirt. Or a pink flapper dress. Or a pink cowboy hat. You don’t need to copy a famously “pink” character in order to tie the color into your costume.

Be creative! Even throwing on a pink wig counts. You might even see an all-pink Darth Vader menacing the rebellion while raising awareness.

Give Out Pink Candy

Decorate your candy bowl with pink ribbons and fill it with pink candy! Splurge on all-pink M&Ms, or look for chocolates wrapped in pink foil. Classic Bubble Tape, Starburst, lollipops, suckers, and jelly beans are all fair game and all come in the desired hue.

If asked why all of your candy is pink, it’s a great way to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Make Your Halloween Orange, Black, and Pink

The holidays are starting to amp up, and it all starts with Halloween. This time of year is perfect for an outpouring of warmth, giving, and generally all the warm and fuzzy feelings. While Halloween may not be the most cuddly of holidays, that doesn’t mean that it’s not an opportunity to share your support for a good cause.

Be the first in your neighborhood to have a pink pumpkin! Add pink into your classic Halloween decorations and party fare! Go all-out pink or add some fun splashes of color to your costume! Give out pink candy to all of your trick-or-treaters!

No matter how you choose to go pink for Halloween, you’re sure to raise awareness for all of the survivors and warriors in your life and beyond.
