We're proud to partner with Kiva, a global nonprofit foundation that makes loans available to emerging entrepreneurs who might not otherwise have access to funds. Many of these loans are even interest-free.

The loans are used to rebuild homes, pursue an education, start or grow a business, and make a lasting difference in 86 countries worldwide.

Kiva has lent a total of $1 billion since its start in 2005, helping 2.6 million people reach for their dreams, 81% of whom are inspiring women, like the women we're about to introduce you to, Lindiwe and Najah.

Lindiwe: From Poverty to Independent Business Woman

Lindiwe, a 22-year-old woman from rural Zimbabwe, is already the owner of three businesses.

She went from growing up in extreme poverty, often going hungry and without essentials, like shoes, to being a successful business owner.

Her most recent venture, Lee Juice, has grown from 20 liters of handmade juice and soda per week to 200 liters per week with the help of training from Kiva’s field partner, Camfed, and a $500 loan that was crowdfunded by 11 lenders on Kiva.

Lindiwe has also opened her first savings account since receiving her loan from Kiva, which is controlled solely by her. Her independence has helped create a new life for Lindiwe.

She says, “I am independent…and if I am independent, I can do anything that I want at any time. If I want to help someone who is in need, I can just take my money and help.”

She wants to show girls that if they work hard, they can achieve anything, even going from having nothing to being able to help those who are in need.

Najah: Thriving Amidst Adversity

Najah is a Palestinian living with her husband and five children in a refugee camp near Jericho. Economics, the availability of finances, and being a woman in this region are all factors that are stacked against her.

Her husband spends most of the week working in Israel, so it falls to Najah to run both the household and the business of raising goats and sheep in order to sell their milk and meat.

With the $2,000 loan from Kiva that was crowdfunded by 69 people, Najah was able to buy more sheep and to improve their living conditions. She’s already paying back her first loan, and has plans for the second: to expand her goat business and build a new home for her family.

Kiva has helped Najah grow her business and make plans for the future, even in a conflict-ridden area.
