7 Tips on naturally caring for your hair in the cold winter

7 Tips on naturally caring for your hair in the cold winter

The weather outside may be getting frightful, but you still need your hair to be delightful. Too much cold can damage your hair just as much as heat, which means it is best to learn hair care tips for every season.

Depending on where you live, it may not get too cold, but your hair will still benefit from the extra attention, and you will look great for all those holiday parties.

How to keep your hair gorgeous in cold weather

Whether you live in a cold climate or are traveling to a cooler part of the world, it’s important to protect your hair from any and all elements. To protect your hair during the winter months, there are a few important tips you should follow.

1. Get a cool air humidifier

Most of the damage done to your hair in the winter is caused by the extra heat in your homes. When it gets cold outside, we turn the temperature up inside and this dries your hair out.

You can reduce the dryness in the air by getting a cool air humidifier. This also helps to reduce the static electricity that comes with dry heat, so your hair won’t get that fuzzy halo.

2. Maintain moisture

The dry air outside will suck the moisture right out of you. Since you can’t walk around with a humidifier, you need to make sure you keep your hair moisturized before stepping out.

Oils and leave-in conditioners are great for when you are on-the-go, but when you have time, try a deep conditioning treatment at home.  The Hair La Vie® Mask is the perfect way to add moisture to your hair from root to tip, for a refreshing and reviving defense against dry, lifeless hair.

Make sure you massage hair treatments deep into your scalp to prevent your scalp from drying out. Ideally, you should treat your hair once every couple of weeks to get shiny and healthy hair all winter long.

3. Always dry before you fly

Before you head out, make sure that your hair is completely dry. Not because you can catch a cold, which is just an old wives’ tale, but because wet hair is the most vulnerable.

If the water in your hair freezes, it can cause the hair to snap and break. These dramatic breaks cause split ends and can make it hard to revitalize your hair to optimal health.

4. Don’t wash as often

Ideally you should wait a day between hair washes, regardless of the water. During the winter, it’s important to make sure you follow this more strictly.

Washing too frequently zaps your hair of its natural oils and dries it out much faster. With the increased indoor heat and outside cool air, there are already enough threats for dryness lurking around.

You should also limit blow-drying and styling to when absolutely necessary (just make sure you dry before you go out).

5. Detangle

The dry air combined with hats and scarves will cause your hair to get more tangled. The longer your hair, the more at risk you are for this. Plus, if there is ever any cold winds blowing, you can be sure to have a tangled mess when you get home.

Use a detangling spray if you have one, or better yet Nº 77 Leave-In, which will not only help to detangle your hair but will leave it unbelievably soft and manageable. Oh, and always carry a comb with you! This way you can tackle the tangles as they happen. The longer they sit, the worse the tangles will get and you risk breaking off those lovely locks.

6. Trim and tidy

The cold weather may have you keeping your hair tied back more often or covered with hats, but that doesn’t mean you should neglect it. Covered hair gets forgotten, and this is a bad habit to fall into.

Stay on top of your trims to get rid of dry and dead ends. Dry ends cause splits in your hair, which create damage all the way to the root. This way you can wow at any holiday party and your hair will be ready to show off when the warm weather finally makes an appearance again.

7. Watch the coverage

Hats and scarves help keep you warm but can damage your hair. Be sure to use silk scarves—the more delicate materials don’t rough up your hair as much.

Wrap a scarf around your head before putting wool hats on and be sure that your hair stays on the outside of any collars too.

Final thoughts

Following these tips will provide the best care for your hair during the colder months. Just because the weather gets dismal and dreary, doesn’t mean your hair has to be as well.

Maintain moisture with regular upkeep and whatever weather comes your way this winter, you can be assured of great looking, healthy hair.
